Yes. It works. I've done it a little differently from the directions, but it's possible.

Here's my story as quickly as I can tell it: I get mean insomnia when I stop drinking. Trying to sleep and running in and out of bursts of sleep is when I slipped lucidly.

Trying to get to sleep, I went into REM quickly enough to remain aware of what was going on.

It's hard to control. You HAVE TO FOCUS. You're technically awake and you have to focus on what's in the dream to stay in and to stay in control. Your mind will naturally want to find a way to confuse you and, effectively, conk your ass back out.

Lucid dreaming is fucked up.

Don't do it, just don't.

The only way to get really good at it is to start remembering your dreams by keeping a dream journal.
When you do this, your dream memories become as vivid as your daytime ones.

Nope, sorry. Whether it doesn't fit within your rigid standards of what you think it is, simply cannot do it or haven't tried is all irrelevant. It does not make something not happen.

If you've ever, EVER had a single nightmare in your life you know dreams have an impact and it is only a minor logical leap that these events can be controlled.

/v/irgin from the last lucid dreaming thread here

This works. It's a technique called WILD (Wake-Into-Lucid-Dreaming). The point is to keep your mind aware while your body remains sleeping. So, when you enter a dream, you will be aware that it's a dream. There's another technique called MILD (Mnemonic-Induced Lucid Dreaming), that involves something called "reality checks." You create a habit of checking reality (trying to breathe through a plugged nose, counting your fingers, looking in mirrors, putting your fingers through your hand, etc). This habit carries over into your dream, and you will become aware you are dreaming when it works (you plug your nose, and are still able to breathe through it).

First one is something anyone can do (though this technique has made people get nightmares due to the fact that it's sleep paralysis), second one is something that may take a little while until the habit becomes natural for you.

I've had a lucid dream... once.
I always heard that looking in mirrors is the best way to see if you're actually dreaming, so I did. Biggest fucking mistake in my life. For some reason, not seeing my reflection in the mirror instantly made my mind collapse and turned my dream into a nightmare that I couldn't wake up from. Not fun stuff.
I was stuck in that nightmare for what seemed like an eternity until finally morning came and my alarm woke me up.

Ever heard the phrase "Too much of a good thing"?
It applies to this kind of shit, tenfold.

Once in a while is fine, but like I said in order to get really good at lucid dreaming and keep control to prolong them....you've gotta start sacrificing space in your head for all those dream memories.

It's a really fucked up thing when your dreams become so real you have to constantly be checking whether you're awake or asleep, or you remember things during the day that never actually happened but it seems like they did.

Why would anyone voluntarily make themselves insane like that?

Here's the trick.
Your mind and body work off each other, and create rhythms to mantain your efficient functioning.By using any form of Lucid Dreaming, you're effectively trying to subvert the natural processes that your body uses to grant you a peaceful night's sleep.

You're effectively /experimenting/ on your ability to sleep and dream- which ultimately also deals with your subconsious.

While it could, in theory, have positive effects, the most logical, sound thing to do is to NOT attempt to do such things. You are literally tampering with your brain.

I'm not your mom, Anon. But do try to keep a healthy mind, as well as your body.

The way lucid dreaming works is by your body falling asleep before your mind does, and I've been able to do it pretty regularly. Problem is, it has a very high chance of happening whenever I drink and the dream is always related to the wherever I am, so I have issues knowing what actually happened ;_;

WILD is the quick, but dangerous way to do it, and MILD is the safer, but takes a while method.

I would suggest WILD is you're planning on testing it one time, or maybe a few times. If you do it too much, your sleep could be effected, and could cause some issues.

MILD allows you to lucid dream, while you're actually dreaming, so nothing gets fucked up in your sleep schedule. However, not everyone can pull of MILD, and you have to be pretty dedicated to doing it.

There is an in-between method that seems to work, but if you're like me and can't sleep if there's too much disturbance/light in the room, then it'll just cause you to be INCREDIBLY sleepy.

You take a blinking light, preferably red, and place it in front of your eyes when going to sleep. When you're dreaming, you'll recognize the light (this'll take a few nights to do), and realize your dreaming. The hard part is forcing yourself to stay asleep. Takes some practice but it works.

Also, for all you people about to try OP's way, thinking "I just won't look in a mirror", to try and avoid having a nightmare... That won't work. Since you've already seen mirror related text, you'll automatically think back to it while Lucid Dreaming, and the mirror will just appear. Everyone in the thread saying it'll cause a nightmare doesn't really help either.
>> Anonymous 07/11/10(Sun)21:51 No.66553XXX
You can look in mirrors all you want, don't listen to the fags telling you mirrors are evil. A mirror is just an object like a desk, TV, or cat. If it triggers anything scary it's because these people are telling you it will so you expect it to happen. It's all in your mind anyway, so just make believe mirrors are good things if you want to wake up.

I've never fully lucid dreamed, I've tried WILD more then a few times and I always get about half way, the farthest I've gotten felt extremely spiritual, and it was more powerful then any drug I've taken. I was in some astral realm of sorts, it was very light and weak though.
>> Anonymous 07/11/10(Sun)21:54 No.66553XXX
A mirror in a dream often reflects how dreamers feel that they are being seen by others in waking life, albeit symbolically. If they see their teeth falling out in a mirror, it reflects their concern about their appearance. Looking at oneself in a broken mirror in a dream reflects feelings that their perspective on themselves is broken or distorted. This is a common dream symbol for someone addicted to alcohol or drugs.

OP's picure puts you in sleep paralysis; probably one of the scariest things ever. You realize you're awake, but you can't move. Usuallly followed by a nightmare.

To safely lucid dream, play music while you're tired. Try to go to sleep naturally, but focus on the music. Keep your focus on the music until you feel awake. Turn off the music and enjoy.

The other one was super, super fucked up and this dude I only vaguely know who is super nice was the darkest dude I'd ever met in the dream. It was pretty much just me fighting him but in a completely not physical sense. I can't even describe it but after that I hope I never get one again as the line between dream and reality really seemed to blur. I felt like how I did after a mushroom trip for a couple days. I know that looking at clocks, looking in a mirror or flipping a light switch can help you tell if you are dreaming, but can also lead to nightmares.

Imagine looking at your analog watch, you don't see two hands and numbers but a jumbled mess of lines and letters, you realize this is a dream, anything can happen.
Then you look in front of you
I once had a dream that I visiting my Grandma's apartment, and she lived in japan. I had to live with her about a year (I did this once before during my childhood). But when I got there weird stuff happening. There was a poltergeist/demon haunting the house. I tried to think nothing of it, but sometimes the curtains and doors would swing wildly, or the lighting will flicker on and off rapidly. I tried to tell myself that it was a dream, and that I had to wake up but nothing would happen. Calling my family didn't work either, as they said the closest they can get me back home would be a month.

I couldn't survive a month. At the end of the dream, I stood in the living room, closed my eyes, braced myself, and openly challenged the ghost. When I opened my eyes the ghost threw everything at me. Horrible mental images, gory scenes, images of my mother's face being distorted in demonic, terrifying ways while I heard a loud wailing the entire time. Everything was shaking and I could do nothing but stand there, absorbing everything that the ghost showed me.

Immediately afterward, I woke up.

Now I'm afraid of sleep paralysis, so I position myself in such when I open my eyes, I see nothing no matter which way I look.

There isn't a problem, unless you're new to Lucid Dreaming. If you've done it a few times, and gotten the hang of it, then yeah, you can just overcome whatever nightmare you're having, and carry on doing whatever.

If you're new to Lucid Dreaming, however, then you'll most likely panic as soon as something scary happens, forgetting you're in control. This'll lead to your imagination taking over, and suddenly instead of being one scary thing chasing you, it's a shit ton of scary stuff, and there's no way back out, except to keep on dreaming.

If you can avoid panicking, you're fine.

that's because you get too excited when you realize it. Literally, your parasympathetic nervous system excites your body past a limit to where you can stay asleep and it wakes you up. You have to catch yourself when you realize your dreaming and stay calm for a bit.

Oddly enough, the first night I tried this, it worked, but not OPs method. It warned me about waking myself up from getting excited when you first realize you're dreaming, so when I did, I just froze in place until I knew I was okay to go DBZ mode and shit

I've had 3 lucid dreams in my life. All 3 times I heard a constant and extremely loud BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ (lolvuvuzela) noise the whole time and it wouldn't stop. Then when I tried to move a body part with my mind, it wouldn't work, so I tried moving again and I just moved my body part in real life and woke up.

I notice I remember all my dreams... I think its cause I'm such a sound sleeper.

Like, I live in south carolina and we have numerous tropical storms and huricanes.

I've slept through a catagory 2 hurricane.

I've also slept through earthquakes and people working on my house's roof.

....the last time I ever had a nightmare is when I was about 15, 7 years ago. Nowadays the only bad dreams i have is of my pets dying... which isn't really scary... so i dont classify it as nightmares.

I pretty much only dream about playing the vidya cause i play it so much in real life.

One time back when I used to play WoW I dreamt myself in molten core with 39 other people in the raid.......i was naked..............everyone laughed at me cept this gnome girl who winked.

I forget the rest but i remember waking up with jizz in my pants.

The method in OP's post is the most difficult way of achieving a Lucid Dream. The best way is just to get into the habit of doing reality checks constantly and recording your dreams in a journal (which itself, though sounding shit to begin with, is actually really amazing)

As a kid I eventually just got fed up with the shitty dreams I was having to the point that I was like "HEY, CUT IT OUT" to my subconscious and gradually became aware of when I was dreaming about 9 out of 10 times.

The strange thing is, lucid dreams, at least for me, are much harder to remember upon waking. Presently I literally have about one or two dreams a month I have any recollection of whatsoever for even a second after they're over.

Can't speak for OP's method, though. I'm a horrible insomniac too and getting to sleep without changing positions multiple times is utterly impossible.

I was 12 when I first had a lucid dream. shit was not fun man

5 weeks before my birthday I lost my virginity and all I could think about for weeks was fucking girls all day even though I was very new at it. It got to the point where I had dreams about it and after my birthday at about 7 or 8ish am I woke up from a very very realistic dream involving me going around with my friends having a good time then everything turns black and I start seeing faces from family photos(blackandwhite photos). I just kept running away from the pictures but they kept following me until the whole sky turned red/orange.

I was creep'd the fuck out and stayed up for almost 2 days.

I tried Lucid Dreaming, only successfully did it a few times though.

I didn't use OP's method, it just takes practice to do it naturally.

It's all about realising that you're dreaming, which puts you in complete control.

Only times I can remember is one where I was flying, then I suddenly realised that this was impossible and I was dreaming. Getting excited is what woke me up though, so that was short lived.

The best one I had was literally being in an empty room with the realisation that I was dreaming, then I was in complete control and could do whatever I pleased.

If you want to be an extra fag you can keep a dream journal in order to aid your lucid dreaming, otherwise you can try OP's method (personally never worked for me).

The last time I remember vividly remembering and taking part in my dreams was quite a few years ago. RE3 was newly released and I was reading and reading an article in a magazine about it and I kept staring at Nemesis just looking how gory he was. That night - and the following week or so - a series of nightmares where he would always pop up, grab me by the head and squeeze until my head exploded ensued. They'd all start out friendly enough; being with family or friends but then theyd all disappear for one reason or another, then Nemesis would appear. Sorta like if you were playing a L4D game only for your team mates to all get yanked off and a tank to spawn - thats how it felt.
I kinda want to try lucid dreaming but im so fucking petrified he'll reappear I never bother.

The panic always fucking sets in.

Dreams are lovely, you don't think much or question shit in them so things usually go swimmingly. When you lucid dream, you're taking away the nice rails that safely guide you through the dream world. You have freedom, but anything bad you think of WILL happen, and the whole thing goes down the tubes.

Last lucid dream I had, I lasted about ten seconds before shit got bad. I was walking with my little sister eating ice cream, realized I was dreaming, suddenly thought "what if a bunch of rabid dogs came out from behind that house?" and then FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK

The last lucid dream I had before that was one of those instances of getting confused and everything heading back into a normal dream. Started making all of maiwaifus real, suddenly my physics professor comes smashing through a wall and any sense of control I had is gone. Shitsux.

Let's say you get so good at lucid dreaming that you dream forever (or what seems like forever).

What if doing that effectively shuts off whatever circuit in your brain that wakes you up?

You'd unintentionally be committing suicide, and nobody would know why. It'd just get written off as one of those "died in their sleep" things.

I have an incredibly vivid imagination. I've had MANY, MANY lucid dreams.

Most of the times, I run quickly for a short time, leap into the air, and hover above the ground.

One very fascinating dream I had went like this:

I am standing in a small, shallow, square pool of water surrounded by apartment buildings. In front of me stands a figure shrouded in darkness. I feel threatened. I look at my hands, and notice they are burning red-hot. I feel a great surge of energy rush to my hands, extend them towards the figure, and release it in a great flash of light... And then I awake.

Sentience is just the illusion by our chemically-controlled brains that we have free will and are not purely products of genetics and environment.

The only times I've ever had sleep paralysis nothing bad happened, first time what I did was fail to move my arms, then I heard some noise, tried moving again, couldn't, so I tried small things, wiggling my toes worked so I was all "eh, my just have been sleeping in a weird angle" and nothing bad happened.

Second time is was just one arm, it was warm so I know I hadn't been sleeping on it, I just picked it up and again, didn't open my eyes. Not even sure why, but I just had this instinct saying "opening your eyes is probably a bad move right now"

I wonder if this is what people who are unconscious for years get.

Imagine that, being unconscious might be one of the best feeling ever, or the most horrible.

I have had chronic sleep paralysis since I was a kid. I get it about once every two months and it isn't so bad once you learn to expect it. As kid it would scare me shitless, but now that I'm older I know that all you need to so is proverbally close your eyes and force yourself to calm down. If there is an intimidating shadow or feeling try and use it to your advantage, it is still your "dream". Last time I had sleep paralysis a crushing force enveloped my face and chest, instead of freaking out I pretended it was a hot guy violently making out with me. Everything went better than expected.

Whenever I lucid dream first thing I do is check my pockets. You never know WHAT you'll find in your pockets. I keep finding this red rubber ball that lets me jump close to 200 feet in the air. Shits awesome, it's like I gain the powers of rubber.

Does smoking marijuana affect whether I can lucidly dream or not? Because it definitely makes them feel real.

It's the HOLY GRAIL of methods, Lucid Dreaming on demand. Problem is it's ridiculously difficult to work. Most of the time you'll either just keep yourself wide awake and feel pissed off that it didnt work, or you'll fall straight to sleep.

As has been posted 999999 times, keep a dream journal, look for recurring dream 'signs' such as being able to do something that you cant in real life, or something weird that often happens in your dreams. When you see these things, realise you're dreaming and try out some cool techniques like imagining there's a naked woman behind you, then turning round to see if she's there

Remember guys! It's fun to be scared some times. If you're planning to try this be sure to think about Silent Hill and listen to the siren before bed. Waking up in Silent Hill is QUITE A RUSH.

I banged my mother in a dream once. It was the least sexy thing ever and I spent the next two weeks being paranoid that it actually happened.

And last night I had a dream that my mom gave me a handjob, but she didn't look like my mom so it was okay.

That's really a larger issue.

>>66557143
I'm implying that you don't, and in all likelyhood the phenomenon is just a subset of normal dreams, and sufficiently common that people identify it as a distinct type.
Lots of people have dreams where they can fly.
Lots of people have dreams where they are running in slow motion.
Lots of people have dreams where their teeth fall out.

I think it's likely lots of people have dreams where they dream they are in control of a dream.

I think you would be more likely to have those dreams if you spent a good portion of the time leading up to going to sleep thinking about the subject. I know I have fallen asleep and dreamed about the vidya I had been playing for the last 4 hours, or the book I was reading, or the subject I was studying.

You only lucid dream for as long as your normal REM cycle lasts, assuming you become INSTANTLY lucid at the beginning (15 mins max usually I believe, but it's been so long since I've checked).

The only difference between a normal dream and a lucid dream is that you know it's a dream, everything else works as normal
