The could have been little pieces of The Beast. I think a Miazaki movie does something similar, but I can't place my finger on it.

Or maybe it wasn't meant to have a clear answer. It's really not that fun when you have ALL the answers. Some well-placed mysteries without clear solutions are really cool, fairly uncommon, and fit the show's overall theme and atmosphere pretty well.

This might be a reference to Spirited Away. I don't want to go full-blown autistic with the Ghibli stuff but it's been very influential for a ton of stuff, and it's audiences are pretty familiar with it now.

Also, family relationships are big thing the show revolves around. That and it's a continuation of the whole "dark doesn't necessarily mean bad" thing, as Adelaide was easier on the eyes but much more antagonistic.

So I'm pretty sure in the beginning, Wirt was teenfag suicidal. I think it's been established that this show is to Dante's Inferno what The Lion King is to Hamlet (roughly). In the beginning of Dante's Inferno, it's implied that Dante is having suicidal thoughts, as he is lost, hopeless, and in a dark forest, and suicides are turned into tree in a very similar forest in hell.
Wirt was a "sensitive," short-sighted teenager with serious self-confidence issues. He chose to jump over the wall himself, choosing The Unknown/Purgatory/whatever the fuck instead of his life within the garden wall.
